Early Life and Education
After graduating high school, 35th Thomas attended Auburn University, where he played baseball as the starting pitcher and first baseman on both teams. As a standout player on each side, he received a full scholarship to play college ball; later earning numerous awards such as Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster Award, Bronze Star Medal Award, and Army Commendation Ribbon Award.
In February 1927 he assumed the information officer position with Fort Sam Houston’s 12th Observation Squadron; later that month he transferred to Kelly Field as secretary and instructor, before later moving onto Kindley Field for personnel adjutant duties and assistant chief of staff for materiel; eventually being transferred back to Bolling Field near Washington D.C. as assistant to General Headquarters Air Force for materiel duties.
Professional Career
Thomas was honored with three All-SEC selections and consensus All-America recognition during his college baseball career, being considered for selection to the U.S. Olympic Team before an injury prevented his participation.
From 1991-1997 he played for the Chicago White Sox and set an MLB record by finishing in the top ten of MVP voting seven consecutive seasons. Additionally he was an outstanding power hitter, leading both in homers and walks multiple times during that time period.
Prior to joining Quinn Emanuel, Thomas was a Partner at Allen & Overy’s London office where he focused on derivatives, capital markets and M&A transactions for European-based companies with U.S. listings. Thomas earned recognition among peers who noted his cleverness and strategic knowledge (Chambers USA and Chambers Global). Thomas also served as Group General Counsel of Novartis.

At Gettysburg, the 35th was in reserve near Bliss Farm and experienced heavy skirmishing on July 1. Chantilly saw some action but no significant engagement with South Mountain; and at Antietam it lost 67 soldiers through deaths, injuries or missing.
President Truman asked Ralph Truman, a veteran and Association president from 35th Division, to assist him with gathering papers and artifacts for his library. Ralph made contact with other veterans to collect the necessary data.
