Andre Roundtree was born on 6 October 1915 in Atlanta, Fulton County Georgia to Frank Roundtree and Rosa Sutton. At University of Iowa he became an All-American football player as well as team captain. Roundtree became best-known for playing John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft as well as its two sequels; additionally he appeared in a number of Blaxploitation films.

He began modeling at an early age after being discovered by Eunice Johnson for the Ebony Fashion Fair and appearing in advertising campaigns for Duke hair grease and Salem cigarettes. Later, he joined the Negro Ensemble Company where he performed plays such as “The Great White Hope and Mau Mau Room”.
Roundtree was an influential pioneer of blaxploitation film history and left an indelible mark on film history as one of its trailblazers. He passed away at age 81 on Oct 24, 2023 and is survived by daughter Morgan; his estimated net worth stands at approximately $2 Million.
