April Thomas takes an integrative approach to patient care, believing the physical aspect is intertwined with emotional, mental and socio-economic wellbeing. She places great value in cultivating strong relationships with her patients.

Since her arrival at Starkville, Thomas has helped her athletes secure eight top-3 finishes at the NCAA javelin championships and 20 marks on State outdoor record books.

Early Life and Education

April Thomas quickly understood the value of being taught by a supportive educator. She credits fifth grade teacher Ms. Boney with imparting invaluable life lessons. April recalls one incident when she gossiped with another student during class, prompting Ms. Boney to bring it up privately and explain its effects on both of them.

April is a holistic nurse practitioner, taking an integrative approach that acknowledges all the factors affecting health, wellness and disease. She understands the importance of creating strong patient relationships in order to provide excellent healthcare, acknowledging that physical wellbeing cannot be separated from mental, emotional and socio-economic wellbeing. With 21 years of holistic higher education experience covering student outreach, admissions housing advising as well as academic advising she also participates on several University committees.

Professional Career

Thomas has over 13 years of experience serving brides, fashion shows and print ads as a makeup artist. Additionally, she holds certifications in airbrush foundation application, FX make-up application and lash application.

Her career began as a pre-school teacher, followed by assistant principal roles. Later she found her calling in education administration focusing on student mental health issues.

April joined Walkers Professional Services (WPS) Bermuda as a Fiduciary and Regulatory Compliance Consultant in 2022, with extensive experience navigating Bermuda’s complex regulatory environment as well as corporate governance experience in providing trust services for a range of Bermudan corporate structures. She holds her Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist credential.

Achievement and Honors

Thomas has overseen her athletes to eight top-three finishes at NCAA javelin championships during her five years coaching, holding 20 marks in both MSU’s outdoor and indoor record books.

With her guidance, Anderson Peters won both the 2018 SEC and NCAA javelin championships – an unprecedented accomplishment since 2004 for any Bulldog! In addition, she guided Favian Cowards to All-American honors in hammer throw and Ed Wesela to third place finish at 2019 NCAA Indoor Weight Throw Championships; earning her USTFCCCA South Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year accolades along the way.

Before joining the Bulldogs, Thomas served as coach of boys’ and girls’ shot put and discus competition at Knoxville Catholic High School and with Knoxville Track Club.

Personal Life

April Thomas is an extremely proud wife, mother and Nana who enjoys spending her free time with her loved ones and two rescue dogs – one from an animal shelter! She’s also a huge animal enthusiast.

She brings 21 years of holistic higher education experience, including campus activities, student advising and academic advising services as well as residence life programming. Eric Holte is her husband; together they have five children.

Thomas has long been the go-to coach at Mississippi State for javelin. Her tutelage led Peters to national titles at both indoor and outdoor javelin in 2018, while Nico Quijera finished runner up while also winning both an NCAA runner-up finish and Spanish national championships. Furthermore, Thomas helped Brianna Smith and Haley Reynolds break school records for shot put and weight throw events respectively.
