Benjamin Babcock is a highly regarded estate planning and probate attorney who stands out among his peers with his expansive knowledge of law and unsurpassed work ethic.

My Great, Great Grandfather made his journey from Haverstraw Town in Orange County NY as a United Empire Loyalist and settled at Ernestown where he received 200 acres of land to build his new life with at least 10 children.

Early Life and Education

Historians have noted Babcock’s high class standing at West Point, engineering skills and bravery during the Civil War. Following that conflict he served President Grant as his military private secretary as well as superintendent of buildings and grounds in Washington D.C. Additionally he oversaw federal lighthouses in Florida.

He was twice indicted for corruption charges but never found guilty. Grant protected him from political attack due to their shared Civil War experiences, protecting him from political attack as a result.

Babcock currently serves as Defiance College’s assistant baseball coach, having joined their program in 2022. An accomplished pitcher himself, Babcock previously held this role at Jefferson High School and Delphos St. John’s High School before arriving at Defiance.

Professional Career

Babcock served as an aide and military private secretary under Union General Ulysses S. Grant during and after the American Civil War, later becoming White House military private secretary, White House military private secretary and later federal lighthouse inspector under Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur until he passed away while on duty at Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse in Florida in 1884.

Babcock coordinated institutional compliance staff members on day-to-day issues while tracking NCAA legislation and national trends that affected her conference, while overseeing their governance process. She currently lives in Manhattan with her husband Ben and their two children. By training she was a Minnesota Gopher but calls Kansas Jayhawks her own. An avid track and field fan – her favorite event being discus throwing!

Achievement and Honors

The Institute of Food Technologists honored Babcock with its Babcock-Hart Award, honoring scientific and technological contributions that benefit public health through food production. The prize is named in memory of Institute’s founder Stephen M. Babcock and Edwin B. Hart who died in 1948.

College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) honored Babcock with its Benjamin Franklin award and Speedo Lifetime Achievement Award as well as their Steadman Trophy award in 2013.

Wake Forest University awarded degrees to 260 graduates during a hooding ceremony and commencement exercises on Hearn Plaza May 20. Dr. Babcock received her Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a Specialization in Management degree.

Personal Life

Benjamin Babcock is married and the proud parent of six children. In his personal life, he enjoys following sports, traveling extensively and cooking delicious family-oriented meals for his loved ones.

He has published books and spoken at numerous conferences, as well as advocated on behalf of medical malpractice victims – successfully litigating their cases to recover millions for his clients.

One such case involved a child injured during or shortly after birth. Additionally, he assisted a client who underwent kidney transplant. Furthermore, he has handled complex brain injury cases as well as spinal cord injuries; conducted over 10 depositions on drop foot cases; as well as settled numerous medical malpractice claims.
