The Chicago Cubs Have Produced Some of the Best Pitchers in Their History

The Chicago Cubs have a history of producing great pitching. The team has produced many Hall of Fame pitchers, from the starting rotation to their bullpen. The Cubs have enjoyed the talents of Rick Reuschel, Greg Maddux, and other talented players in the past.

From 1904 to 1910, Three Finger Brown had a great career. In that time period, he went 160-66 with a 1.56 ERA. His ERA of 1.04 in ’06 still stands as the club record. In his final year, he went 27-9 with a 1.31 ERA in 50 games, striking out 172 batters and walking just 53. His 2009 campaign earned him 9.5 BWAR.

Jeff Jenkins is one of the greatest Cubs pitchers. He had 284 wins in his career, with 167 wins with Chicago. Despite not being feared by hitters much, he was capable accumulating win after win and a low ERA.

The Cubs added Stroman in the offseason. His 3.02 ERA in 171 innings pitched last year helped him to become the team’s most notable signing of the 2021 offseason. He went 10-13 in 33 starts and struck out 158 batters. He has a strong future in the MLB and should be a key part of the rotation this season. Another candidate for the Cubs is Cam Sanders. He has a strong resume at Triple-A and could be called up before the trade deadline passes. He threw at 97 mph using a radar gun in St. Paul last season and reached a top speed of 99 mph. If his arm is healthy, he may be able to make it to the major leagues in 2022.

Brown was one of the best pitchers of his era. Brown pitched for Chicago for 14 years and was in the top-10 for ERA nine times. During his career, Brown had two of the ten best individual seasons in Cubs history. His greatest season was 19-6 in 1927 with a 2.09 ERA. He pitched 48 innings for the Cubs in 1916.

Maddux’s first full season in Chicago was not an easy one. He posted an ERA of 5.61, but a year later he became a different man. He improved his record to 19-12 in his second and third full seasons and lowered his ERA down to 2.95. Unfortunately, Maddux failed the Cubs in the NLCS against the Giants, allowing twelve runs in two starts. He was a great Cub, and one of the best pitchers on the team the following season.

Ryne Sandberg was another great player for the Chicago Cubs. He hit for average and power, and was a threat on the basepaths. In addition, he won the National League MVP award and won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards. His career numbers have made him a favorite of Chicago fans, and he is one of the last remaining players from the legendary 1969 team.
