Courtney hails from Mid-Michigan and obtained her Bachelor’s of Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice from Central Michigan University – graduating Summa Cum Laude. After this, she attended Michigan State University College of Law where she obtained a Juris Doctorate, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
She continued prosecuting adult and juvenile criminal cases while simultaneously expanding into divorce and family law matters. Representing clients from initial stages through trial (if necessary) she now also offers her expertise as a family law mediator.
Early Life and Education
Courtney Thom hails from Austin, Texas and studied at the University of Houston before leaving to join Planet Cancer and Livestrong as an employee specializing in helping young adults battling cancer find support services.
As an Orange County deputy district attorney for over a decade, she prosecuted felony sexual assault cases. As part of this role, she conducted criminal discovery, met with survivors of sexual assault and conducted trials against those charged.
Now she specializes in family law matters related to divorce and separation, serving high-profile women from fashion, beauty and art industries as clients. Additionally, she contributes regularly to London Writers’ Salon where she hosts a consultation service providing advice on query letters, pitches and project summaries; through The Query Doula website.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice from Central Michigan University, Courtney continued on to Michigan State University College of Law where she earned a law degree with distinction – graduating Magna Cum Laude. Courtney began her legal career as an Assistant State Attorney for Florida focusing on prosecuting adult and juvenile felony and misdemeanor crimes including sexual assault, sex offenses against children and forcible sex. In 2014 she returned home and joined W. Jay Brown PLC (now Brown Law PLC), where she now handles divorce as well as family law related matters.
Achievement and Honors
Thom was an exceptional teacher, taking an undivided interest in each of his students. He always managed to make them feel like his biggest supporter – whether that meant helping them tackle an intimidating story or communicating law concepts effectively.
He kept production nights entertaining with playlists spanning Mel Torme to Bob Dylan to Elvis; it’s easy to understand why he will be deeply missed.
