Early Life and Education

Daniel Zhu made his concert stage debut at nine, performing Mendelsohn’s violin concerto with China Youth Chamber Orchestra. Since then he has collaborated with some of today’s foremost composers such as George Benjamin, Gyorgy Kurtag and Krzysztof Penderecki (deceased).

The Book of Daniel is an important text in apocalyptic literature and wisdom tradition, featuring an upright character who can interpret dreams for powerful rulers while garnering their respect and affection in return.

Daniel Zhu has made an international name for himself as a violinist, performing around the globe and serving as guest lecturer at Sibelius Academy, Tanglewood Festival, Princeton University and Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Additionally he has recorded world premiere recordings by Bright Sheng, Boris Papandopulo and others.

Daniel was honored with a Winston Family Award for being an approachable and encouraging mentor within the University Honors program.

Apurva Raghu, Swarnapali Keppetipola and Niki Gooya from ILS were honored to have their experiment selected for the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program competition this summer aboard the International Space Station. Their project aims to investigate bacteria growth on different surfaces under microgravity conditions; making this win at ILS two in two years!

Personal Life

According to Chinese media reports, Zhu does not lead an extravagant lifestyle and works long hours. He often starts his workday around 6 or 7 am and stays until late at night; during one typhoon in Shanghai they manually drained the factory using plastic buckets, in order to prevent potential disaster. “Efficiency and pragmatism are central tenants at our company,” according to an interview in 2021 with him.

Zhu enjoys playing video games and spending time with his family in his free time, as well as sampling different cuisines (his specialty being Japanese food). Furthermore, Zhu shares a special bond with his dog Gustav and enjoys Tokusatsu series such as Tokusatsu: Heroines Rising as well as cosplaying as heroes when possible. Zhu also suffers from Asperger syndrome causing him to behave differently than most.

Zhu’s estimated net worth as of June 8th 2018 was estimated to be $898 Thousand. He holds at least 8,800 units of Koppers Inc stock and has made three trades since 2017.

Zhu told PCauto, a Shanghai-based news portal, in 2021 that he prefers working from home rather than heading into an office setting and described his working style as being both “efficient and pragmatic,” according to CNN.

Zhu said his workdays begin between 6 or 7 AM and often last past midnight, depending on the project at hand. For instance, after working on a plant damaged by Typhoon Haiyan in Shanghai where employees manually drained water with buckets for several days at a time until all work had been completed manually for approximately one week. Zhu lives nearby his company’s sprawling Shanghai factory.
