Darryl Earl Thames, Sr.
Daryl Franklin Hohl hails from Pottstown, Pennsylvania. As an accomplished singer-musician he is well known for his collaborations with John Oates as well as solo material. Since 2007, Hohl has hosted the online/webcast series Live from Daryl’s House.
Robert Fripp was also impressed by his contributions. These recordings can be found on his 1979 album Exposure.
Early Life and Education
Darryl Earl Thames Sr. of Manchester, CT passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side on June 29, 2023. He was an adored husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many.
He attended Howard University and pledged the Beta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. headquartered in Hartford, CT.
Daryl was also widely respected for his expertise in renovating historic homes across both America and England, earning himself his own reality show on DIY Network called Daryl’s Restoration Over-Hall. Additionally, since 2007 he hosted Live from Daryl’s House online video broadcast featuring musical acts such as Johnny Rzeznik, CeeLo Green, The O’Jays Smokey Robinson and KT Tunstall among many others.
Professional Career
Daryl worked as an Associate Director at Half Moon Young People’s Theatre from 2002 – 2005 with special emphasis on disability and community. Over this time, Daryl directed 12 productions and over 20 participatory projects that highlighted access and inclusion as key objectives.
In 1985, Hall and Oates formed the rock duo Hall and Oates with guitarist John Oates. Their hit “She’s Gone” hit No. 7 on Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and No. 5 in Hot 100 chart; additionally they wrote or co-wrote nine other popular Billboard tracks.
In 2005 he participated in Drake Music’s Beyond Boundaries Nicaragua series. A team of disabled artists, musicians, and young people traveled through rainforests, deserts, rivers and mountains from Atlantic to Pacific as easily as if flying. This show was then turned into four one hour programmes broadcast on BBC 2.
Achievement and Honors
Thames was not only an accomplished musician and politician; he also founded and championed school reconstruction projects to ensure Manchester children can attend state-of-the-art facilities. A lifelong resident, in 2022 he was appointed Town Clerk embracing its purpose to serve the public by digitizing records readily accessible for use by residents – becoming one of Manchester’s inaugural class of Luminaries of Change.

Musician and community servant, Aws is also committed to serving his local area. Since 2012 he has served on the Manchester Board of Education as Chair. Through his involvement with school reconstruction projects across Manchester he ensures students access state-of-the-art facilities.
His books explore his passions – great pop eccentrics and populist African-American music. Additionally, he has spoken at festivals and the V&A on this topic.
