David Herbster has served as Athletic Director at the University of South Dakota since 2007. Prior to that, he held positions as Sports Marketing Manager at Pittsburg State and North Dakota State.

He spearheaded and managed an ambitious fundraising campaign that raised more than $100 million to construct a basketball arena, track and field complex and soccer facility. Furthermore, he reshaped the department’s annual giving initiatives and founded The Howling Pack–an alumni program designed to promote campus life–as part of its annual giving initiative.

Dave Hester is a man of mixed ethnicity born on July 23rd 1964 at Camp Pendleton Marine Base near Oceanside, California. His parents are German-Irish and Mexican respectively.

Dave was taught how to buy and sell equipment and tools from auctions at an early age, eventually starting his own business selling supplies for military bases in Orange County, California.

He earned his license as an auctioneer in 1992 and quickly gained notoriety for his signature catchphrase ‘Yuuup!’, a shout he shouts when he sees a bidder at an auction.

Herbster has served as USD athletic director since 2003, raising more than $100 million for a new basketball arena and track and field complex. Additionally, he chairs the Summit League Joint Council and sits on the South Dakota Special Olympics Board of Directors.

After a brief career in property market banking, Herbster joined USD as associate athletic director. Under his guidance, USD’s student-athlete program has flourished with 75 percent of athletes being on the Summit League’s Academic Honor Roll.

One month prior to the May 10 primary, a state senator and two women have accused Herbster of sexually harassing them at an event last year. As a result, Ricketts, who supported President Trump in the Republican primary, has called on Herbster to withdraw from contention.
