David Lehman is a poet, writer and literary critic. He’s the founder and series editor of The Best American Poetry journal.
He is the author of numerous books of poetry, essays, book reviews and articles for various publications. Additionally, he has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career.
Early Life and Education
Professor of literature and director of the Poetry Program at New School University, Lehman is the author of numerous books of poetry and literary criticism. His most recent release, The Morning Line, is an ambitious collection that seamlessly blends wit, quotidian charm, and off-the-cuff spontaneity.
He teaches at both New School and NYU, is a frequent guest speaker at other universities and writing programs, and his work has been featured in numerous literary journals and anthologies.

Dave Lehman has made a name for himself as an accomplished businessman over the course of more than three decades. He began as a geologist at ExxonMobil before founding several companies that focused on oil and gas exploration and development.

He has also been recognized as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars, an honor that recognizes teacher role models who motivate and encourage students to achieve excellence.
He is a renowned editor of poetry and literary criticism, most recently serving as general editor of the annual Best American Poetry series. Additionally, he has authored multiple books of poetry and essays on literature. Lehman has been an enthusiastic supporter of F&M wrestling for many years, creating the Lehman Fund – an endowment that helps ensure its continuation and enhancement.
He serves as a trustee of the College, serving on its enrollment, student life and technology committees. He has served as mentor to several wrestling students and is an enthusiastic follower of the sport.
