Dave Shaffer

David Shaffer is the President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Enersys Inc. He also serves as a Director for Cogent Communications.

David focuses his practice on a variety of legal matters involving energy and capacity markets, ISO/RTO operations and governance and transmission system planning and cost allocation.

He has extensive experience in the utility industry, having worked on projects for several public and private utilities. He has been involved in regulatory and litigation matters for both electric and natural gas transmission systems.

Early Life and Education

David Shaffer was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on April 20, 1936. He was the son of Isaac and Joyce (Freedman) Shaffer.

He attended Grove City High School in Grove City, Ohio. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a master’s degree from Miami University (Ohio).

His musical career began when he joined the music department at his home college, Miami University, where he conducted the marching band for 30 years. He has won numerous awards for his music compositions, including the ASCAP Standard Award.

He has published over 250 compositions in print. His compositions have been used at clinics and music festivals across the globe. He has also arranged his own music for many different ensembles. He has performed in the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia.

Professional Career

David Shaffer has been working in the insurance industry since 1996. He has extensive experience in all facets of the malpractice business, including medical professional liability underwriting for one of the nation’s largest physician-malpractice insurers and healthcare facilities underwriting.

He also has a background in the consumer-oriented insurance sector and helped to establish United Policyholders, an organization dedicated to educating and empowering consumers. He serves as a member of the board of directors for this non-profit group.

In addition, he leads the ministry’s Marriage Care program and presents a series of parenting programs. Shaffer and his wife Daniele have a passion for bringing the love of Jesus to people worldwide through Son Shine Ministries, where they live in Azle.

Achievements and Honors

Dave Shaffer’s most important achievements have been in his family and the community. He is a former First Ward Commissioner and currently works as a commercial banker at Macatawa Bank. He also is an active volunteer at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Grand Rapids.

He has also received a number of honors from his professional career. He is a renowned child psychiatrist and a recipient of the Ruane Prize for Childhood Psychiatric Disorders.

He has also been recognized for his contributions to the development of psychiatric classification and was the co-author of the multi-axial modification of the ICD-9 system. He is also a member of the Child and Adolescent Mood Disorders Work Group for DSM-V. He has also been awarded numerous awards for his research.

Personal Life

Dave Shaffer enjoys travel, the arts and being outdoors. He also loves being a family man. He and his wife Daniele are members of Doxology Bible Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

David is a highly accomplished musician and conductor. He is in demand as a conductor for new music reading clinics, music festivals and music education seminars.

He has been instrumental director for the Saskatchewan School of Fine Arts and served as a guest conductor at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. He has adjudicated championship events for Drum Corps International and Drum Corps Midwest.

He is the Chairman of Just Born Inc., a Bethlehem, PA family owned company that manufactures Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales and Teenee Beanee jelly beans and Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews and Peeps brand marshmallows. He is also a member of the Bethlehem Rotary Club.
