Early Life and Education

Bonham began playing drums at an early age, starting with a plastic model kit. By age ten, he invested in his first real drum set and has been growing ever since.

He credits Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich as major influences in his early career, learning a great deal from both men.

Bonham joined Led Zeppelin when it formed, and was soon given an opportunity to showcase his skills. Additionally, he met drummer Carmine Appice who introduced him to Ludwig drums – which would become his primary instrument throughout life.

In the 1970s, he added congas and orchestral timpani to his arsenal of percussion instruments. According to Dallas Times Herald, he is credited as being the first concert performer to use electronic drum synthesisers during his ‘Kashmir’ performance in 1977.
