David Granville – Actor and Comedian
David Granville is an accomplished actor despite his stutter. He’s best known for his roles in Open All Hours and Still Open All Hours.
He has earned recognition for his work in the medical field. Currently, he serves as Associate Director of the VCH Research Institute and also holds a professorial appointment at the University of British Columbia.
Early Life and Education
David Granville’s early life was one of hard work. He was born in Columbus, Ohio to a part-Native American, part black mother and black father.
He attended school intermittently until the age of ten, then left to work in railroad machine shops and steel mills. Additionally, he studied electricity through reading books.
He had an eye for invention. His multiplex telegraph invention enabled operators to send messages more rapidly than before, and he also created an improved air brake system. With over 60 patents under his belt – many of which were assigned to major electrical equipment manufacturers – he held a unique place in history.
Professional Career
David Granville is a scientist who studies aging and inflammation. His work involves studying the role of immune-secreted proteases known as granzymes (Granule-secreted enzymes) in tissue injury, inflammation, and repair.
He also researches the role of a protein called GzmB in skin blistering and impaired healing after burn injury.
David is a researcher who has earned numerous accolades and awards for his work. He is currently appointed Canada Research Chair and Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar.
He is the Scientific Founder of viDA Therapeutics Inc, a UBC spinoff company. His research has produced first-in-class therapeutics for autoimmune and chronic skin inflammation conditions. As part of this effort, he has filed 44 patents.

Granville Pharmaceuticals’ accomplishments include the development of novel first-in-class therapeutics for autoimmune and chronic inflammatory skin conditions. The Company is now taking these discoveries to the next level by translating them into clinical trials.
Dr. Granville is a co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) for the Company, as well as being a Full Professor and Executive Director at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute – Western Canada’s largest hospital-based research institute.
He has earned numerous accolades, such as a Canada Research Chair, Top 40 Under 40 Award, Business in Vancouver Forty Under 40 and Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar. Additionally he was the 2007 American Heart Association Louis and Arnold Katz Basic Science Prize runner-up.

David Granville was a kind, quick-witted and fun-loving individual. He had an infectious laugh that warmed the soul of anyone around him, and always wanted to do what could help those in need.
He had a kind heart and enjoyed volunteering for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Additionally, he took part in various elections.
He was also a writer and social activist, working with Restore the Fourth to champion animal rights.
He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed traveling. His deep sense of humor and insatiable curiosity about people will be sorely missed by his loved ones and friends alike. Survived by his wife Peggy, he leaves behind many loving memories.
