Early Life and Education
On March 19, 1856, George Aldrich was born in Adams, Massachusetts to his mother and an accomplished educator who received private tuition.
He completed his medical education at the University of Vermont and College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore, Maryland and was then licensed to practice medicine in Massachusetts.
After practicing briefly in that state, he relocated to Anoka, Minnesota and is now a surgeon specializing in eye, ear, nose and throat diseases.
He married Flora L. Southard in Westford, New York in 1883. Born and raised in Westford, Otsego County, she had been a member of the old Knickerbocker and Sutherland class throughout her childhood years. Her concern for those suffering greatly was always front of mind for him.
Professional Career
George Aldrich’s career has taken him around the world multiple times. Additionally, he worked with NASA, sniffing everything that goes up into space to detect any smells that could distract astronauts or cause sickness.
He’s part of Nasa’s odor panel, which detects every material entering space and rates it on a scale from zero to four – with 2.5 being an especially pungent smell. After 44 years on the job, he’s earned himself quite a few nicknames along the way!
When not sniffing out odours, he enjoys spending time with his wife Joyce and children Ellie, Jessica, Christopher, Crystal and Justin. Additionally he volunteers at various events like calling bingo at Cornish Fair or coaching youth bowling.

George Aldrich was one of Mendon’s founding fathers. He was born in Derbyshire, England and married Katherine Seald on September 3, 1629.
He immigrated to America around 1631, settling in Dorchester and Braintree before arriving in Mendon. As one of the seven proprietor families in Mendon, his contributions helped shape and shape the town.
After the Revolution, he served as captain of Major Whitcomb’s Independent Corps of Rangers in the Continental Army and remained with them until 1781. Additionally, he was a member of New Hampshire’s legislature.
