George Alvin – A 91-Year-Old Member of Local One

George Alvin, 91 years old and a card-carrying member of Local One, enjoys many of the rewards from his long association with the union. Resurrecting Jesus eight times a week and seeing old Hollywood star Tallulah Bankhead in her most daring outfits are experiences George wouldn’t trade for anything.

At WHOI, he helped design the submarine Alvin. This vessel features six interconnected RCA computers to aid scientists in interpreting and remembering data.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they settled in Duplin County and started cultivating tobacco on several farm plots in Cabin Community and Smith Communities.

They raised a variety of vegetables and fruit on their land. Furthermore, they were members of Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church.

George and his wife Fannie owned “Fannie’s General Store” in Kenly, situated at Oakwood Street and Cedar Street. Here they sold a wide variety of merchandise.
