George Hite had a prosperous career, was happily married with two children, and lived a fulfilling life – until addiction took its toll. Without treatment for his addiction to opiates, all of those things began to crumble around him.

George found himself without a job, behind on his bills and his marriage crumbling around him. It wasn’t until he faced these consequences that George made the decision to change things around for the better.

Early Life and Education

George Hite was born on February 26th 1944 in Greenwood, Mississippi to a large family and enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm for storytelling and infectious laugh with those around him.

His interest in law and love of music were both significant aspects of his life. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church choir, as well as playing guitar and harmonica.

Hite earned his law degree from Howard University and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy before becoming a legal officer with the Marine Corps on Okinawa, Japan. In 1972 he wed Christine and they worked closely together with military personnel on various missions throughout their lives despite age differences and distance. Despite all that, their relationship remained strong throughout Hite’s lifetimes.

Professional Career

Since April 2009, George Hite has served as superintendent of Prince George’s County Schools after joining them as deputy superintendent in 2006.

He has also served as assistant superintendent in Georgia and director of middle school instruction in Virginia.

Hite has guided a school system through several years of budget crisis. He is credited with making the system more efficient and raising student achievement levels.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Hite was an active member of the community. He served as board member and president for numerous organizations and actively engaged in land conservation efforts.

Achievements and Honors

As Superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools, he guided his district through a period of rapid change. When the state took control of public education in 2001, its School Reform Commission strongly supported charter schools and other forms of privatization.

He saw the district through that difficult period and helped it recover financially enough to be returned to local control. Despite all obstacles, Hite remained committed to its educational mission.

He has held leadership roles in a number of civic and professional organizations. He served on the Edina School Board, Edina Community Education Board, Minneapolis Family & Children’s Service Board, Southeast Human Services Board and Colonial Church Trustee.

Personal Life

George Hite had a distinguished career in public service. He served as City Planner, Director of Public Works and Engineering, Assistant City Manager and then first City Manager of Eden Prairie, MN from 1956-68.

He was also involved in a number of civic and professional organizations. He served on the Colonial Church Trustee and Council, Minneapolis Family & Children’s Services Board, Minnesota Historical Society and Keweenaw County Historical Society boards.

He took great pleasure in singing and playing music on various instruments. For many years he was an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church choir, as well as volunteering for land conservation initiatives – earning him lifetime membership to the National Society of Land Conservators.

Net Worth

George Hite boasts a net worth of approximately $14 million, which he has amassed through his film career and real estate business.

In the early 1990s, he began working as a dolly grip (camera operator) in film and television production. Later, he created his own short films and began directing movies.

He is a real estate investor with properties in multiple cities around the world, including Los Angeles and Lake Como in Italy. Additionally, he owns an investment property in The Bahamas.

Sources estimate he has an impressive $100 million in real estate investments. These include a penthouse at Millennium Tower, an 8,000 square foot mansion on New York City’s Upper West Side and other properties. Furthermore, he is an active stock trader; having executed more than 14,000 trades since 2020.
