Grace Jones Fox Theater
Grace Jones at the Fox Theater
When it comes to multi-hyphenate icons, legendary Jamaican performer Grace Jones stands alone. From her days as a disco diva to her role as a Bond girl, Jones has always maintained a singular artistic vision that continues to mesmerize and enthrall.
For her 75-minute performance Saturday night at the Fox Theater, Jones wore a silver skull mask with feathers protruding from the top and an under-bust corset covered in white body paint. She also wore a pair of jeans that resembled her signature “slip-on” pants and a black tank top that was decorated with a Keith Haring-inspired pattern.
The outfit changes kept the audience on their feet and focused on what they were supposed to be looking for: the singer bringing her unique musical and fashion style to life. From a cappella versions of “Amazing Grace” and an accelerated take on her cover of Roxy Music’s “Love Is the Drug,” to a “Pull Up to the Bumper” that immersed her in the audience, Jones delivered an unforgettable show.
She threw in a couple of new songs, too: an afrobeat-infused version of her classic “I’ll Paint You All Black,” and a take on her 1980s album “Nightclubbing” that features her famous high-top fade. Her stage presence was as fluid and present as her songs, and her sassy attitude and command of the mic were apparent throughout the show.
Despite her age, she had everything you would expect from the star: an incendiary voice, seductive personality and uncanny mastery of the balance between masculinity and femininity. She screamed out lines that kept the crowd on their feet, and she had a grin that could suck you in.
