John Bocek had a renowned legal career, yet he also held numerous other interests. In addition to serving on the Federal Way school board, he served as president of FWEA – the local teachers union.
Bocek had been embroiled in a long-running dispute with the school district. He and other board members had clashes with superintendent Murray Taylor over numerous matters.
Early Life and Education
John Bocek was a lawyer and judge in Auburn. Additionally, he served on the Federal Way School Board.
In the 1970s, Bocek found himself embroiled in an intense conflict with the Federal Way Education Association over teacher union activism. This militant group had emerged out of a nationwide surge of teachers’ union activism at that time.
The Federal Way School Board president was one of many who witnessed the rise of this movement. Tensions between FWEA and school board reached their pinnacle during a 20-day teachers strike that occurred in September 1974.
Professional Career
Bocek is an acclaimed grappler who has competed in the UFC since 2007, appearing on seven Canadian cards during which time he achieved three win streaks while submitting Alvin Robinson, David Bielkheden and Joe Brammer.
He first defeated Dustin Hazelett at UFC 124, then narrowly lost to Jim Miller in March 2010. A month later he won by unanimous decision over Nik Lentz at UFC 140. Throughout his career he has also faced off against Benson Henderson and Mac Danzig.
Recently, he has been on a roll, winning 9 out of his last 10 fights. But in this one, John Alessio will have his hands full with him.
Achievements and Honors
John Bocek is no stranger to the UFC. He’s competed in two of their biggest events and earned himself a reputation for his submission skills and willingness to stand up against bigger opponents.
He is the proud owner of several UFC trophies. His first victory came via a decision over Alvin Robinson at UFC 91 in November 2008, followed by his takeout of David Bielkheden at UFC 97, winning by rear-naked choke.
Bocek is not only a talented fighter but an exemplary family man as well. He’s the proud father of three and grandfather to five, as well as serving in the Arlington Police Department and former Army Reserves. Additionally, Bocek owns an upscale gym in Washington D.C.
Personal Life
John Bocek lived a life full of family and friends. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, taking photographs, tending to his garden and riding his 4-wheeler. Additionally, he worked on his land with passion.
Bocek was highly active in his community and deeply religious. A member of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Weirton, West Virginia, he devoted himself to service.
Bocek had previously admitted to assaulting a female, cyberstalking and making threatening calls in January 2018. On that occasion he was sentenced to 45 days in jail.
