Castleton hails from Vermont where he spent his formative years skiing and racing. A two-time USSA Tri-State Division Skier of the Year, coach, and FIS Racer, his accomplishments continue to impress those around him.
He has shared his passion for skiing with thousands of people. As a snowsports learning director, program director and coach at several schools such as Johnson State College in Vermont, Carrabassett Valley Academy in Maine and Sugarloaf Ski Area also in Maine, his expertise has been greatly valued by those around him.
His passion for skiing has driven him to become a ski coach. He has coached teams throughout New England and is currently coaching the U19 team at Okemo Mountain Resort. Additionally, he serves on the NFHS National Skiing Committee and resides in Clarendon, Vermont with his wife and three children.

Castleton University boasts an enviable reputation for academics and varsity sports excellence. The Department of Health, Human Movement & Sport offers a 120-credit Bachelor’s in Kinesiology with a 3+2 pre-athletic training sequence for undergrads as well as a master’s program in Athletic Training.
The Spartans boast a varsity women’s rugby program that posted an impressive 5-2 record this fall, taking down NEC three times and Manhattanville twice. Team MVP Hannah Coupas set a single-season try record by scoring 21 times.
Other award-winning programs for the Spartans included their golf program, whose alumnus Nicholas Ojala claimed medalist honors at three LEC tournaments this season and set an LEC single season scoring average record. Furthermore, the Spartans finished as runners up at the Western New England Invitational.
Personal Life
John Castleton’s life was marked by tragedy. He outlived many members of his family and had at least three children who tragically passed away during childhood or adolescence.
Unfortunately, political and personal circumstances ultimately took its toll on his fortune. Unable to invest in his beloved farm, by 1945 it had been sold.
Frances Dodge Johnson brought back Castleton Estate with her vision and flair. Focusing on Saddlebreds, she expanded the estate’s equine operations.
She also breeds Standardbreds and made a name for herself by breeding the legendary trotting Greyhound, whose world record mile was made possible thanks to her presence astride him. To this day her bloodlines remain highly valued within the Saddlebred world.
