Early Life and Education
John Bertrand Gurdon (JBG) was born in 1933 in the village of Frensham in South England, endowed with a large amount of National Trust heathland and ponds. He was the eldest of three children of William Gurdon and his wife, Marjorie Byass.
When World War II began in 1939, JBG’s mother struggled to provide for him and his brother on limited rations. He was sent to a private school, and he grew up with a strong interest in nature.
He later went to Oxford, where he studied Biology in the Department of Zoology. He became a friend of Sir Alister Hardy, and his academic career was launched.
Professional Career
John is the founding Practice Principal and Senior Conservation Architect of the nationally respected conservation and regeneration practice of John Cunnington Architects. He has developed a reputation for the sensitive re-use of historic buildings, in particular churches, and their effective integration into contemporary design.
In 1990 he set up his own practice to pursue his particular interests in architectural conservation. During this period he completed a number of schemes of repair and renewal in a variety of historic buildings.
John also carried out quinquennial inspection surveys and reports of a large number of churches as well as a variety of monuments and historic buildings for English Heritage. He has extensive experience of condition surveys – including of major building complexes – and is able to advise on all aspects of the conservation of historic buildings.
Achievements and Honors
A self-educated merchant in the Wiltshire countryside, Cunnington was a dab hand at archaeology and had access to a plethora of interesting sites. The most impressive feat was excavating several hundred barrows in the course of his illustrious career. It was a feat of sheer ingenuity and luck that he managed to unearth some rather revealing evidence of past inhabitants of the region.
He and his wife, Marlene, live in Key Largo Florida; Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan and Beaver Creek, Colorado where he works on the nexus of his portfolio of mid-sized energy projects, which includes a new solar plant in Ohio. The biggest challenge is keeping up with an ever-increasing number of clients, some of which have the luxury of time. He has a reputation for being both a gentleman and a doting father who takes his job seriously to the core. The best part is that he has the good fortune to have an equally supportive and affable wife.
Personal Life
John was born in London to William Gurdon, a member of an old Suffolk family who traces their roots back to 1199. Their motto was virtus viget in arduis, or ‘virtue flourishes in adversity’.
He started working as an assistant lecturer in the zoology department at Oxford, a post that provided minimal teaching duties and allowed him to establish his own research group. This gave him a sense of autonomy that was crucial to his later professional life.
During his time in university, JBG made many friends and contacts, including Miriam Rothschild, who provided him with ski mountaineering holidays. This helped him to develop a passion for skiing, which he continued throughout his life. He also grew a keen interest in lepidoptera, raising large numbers of moths from their larval stages.
