Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the GLA gene that cause deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A. Without this enzyme, neutral glycosphingolipids such as globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) accumulate within lysosomes throughout the body.

Early Life and Education

John Fabry was born in Glassport, PA on August 5, 1932 and attended Glassport High School before continuing on to West Virginia University.

He served in the Air Force and achieved the rank of Brigadier General. For his exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service, he was awarded with the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal.

He was actively involved in several organizations such as the Pittsburgh Knights of Columbus, Bellaire Sons of Italy in America, Rantoul Senior Citizen’s Club and Air Force Association. Furthermore, he attended St Malachy Catholic Church in Pittsburgh regularly.

Professional Career

General Fabry is a senior officer in the Air Force. He currently serves as mobilization assistant to Director, Communications and Information at Headquarters U.S. Air Force and Commander of Electronic Systems Center at Hanscom AFB, Mass.

He has served in the Air Force since March 1966, serving as an air traffic control staff officer and U.S. Air Force Academy ROTC liaison officer from 1980 to 1987.

In 1968, Fabry created the country’s first baseball batting gloves and football gloves in 1969 – innovations which revolutionized professional athletes’ games. Nowadays, Fabry sells a wide range of sports and fitness equipment, including its famous patented carpal tunnel protection glove line; its products are sold worldwide in over 165 countries.

He served on the Packers Board of Directors for many years, championing their cause and its players. His contributions will be missed by all who knew him.
