John Mastromarino was an eminent oral surgeon with a beautiful home and family. Additionally, he co-authored an influential book on dental implants.

However, Mastromarino’s life took an unfortunate turn when he developed an addiction to painkillers. Ultimately, he was found guilty of body stealing, forgery and grand larceny and sentenced to 18-54 years in prison.

Early Life and Education

John Mastromarino was born in 1921 in Massachusetts to Leigh Mastromarino and Clorinda Mastromarino.

He then went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, followed by a doctorate in dentistry from Harvard University.

He was ultimately found guilty of stealing organs and body parts from deceased individuals to sell in tissue banks across the US. To accomplish this, he utilized a network of funeral homes and cutters to harvest parts from corpses before falsifying records to reap profits.

Mastromarino caused the injuries to several people, including an assistant working in surgery who suffered permanent facial droop due to damage caused to her patient’s seventh cranial nerve by mastromarino’s actions. She filed a lawsuit against him and Mastromarino eventually pleaded guilty to drug possession and received between 15-30 years imprisonment for his crimes.

No matter the difficulties in his life, he never gave up. His fight with COVID-19, a disease that caused him so much suffering, was an inspiration to us all.

He is survived by his wife Theresa and daughter Nicole, mother Marion D’Ariano and sister Phyllis Berardo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mastromarino started Biomedical Tissue Services (BTS), which sold body parts and organs for transplants. This venture proved lucrative, but the police soon took notice of his activities. He was eventually caught and convicted on several charges; ultimately serving 18 to 54 years in prison.
