Early Life and Education
John McGrail was born in 1934. He was the son of Frank and Mary McGrail. His father was a toy salesman who spent many years working for Hasbro. In the 1960s, his parents moved to Maine. After graduating from high school, he attended Cornell University, earning a bachelor’s degree. He also earned a master’s degree from Worcester State College.
After his graduate work, he began a career as a history teacher at Nipmuc Regional High School in Upton. From there, he went on to teach social sciences at the Worcester Alternative School. While at the Alternative School, he was involved with the school’s “Crossroads” program.
He taught at Marlboro, Clinton, and West Boylston public school systems. Eventually, he joined the Army National Guard.
