John David Merwin was the 7th appointed Governor of the US Virgin Islands and its first native-born Governor. He was an accomplished politician and renowned author.
He was also a magazine editor and founded Rod & Reel magazine and Fly Tackle Dealer, two of the early trade publications in fishing. Later he joined Field & Stream magazine where he served as its Fishing Editor from 2003 until 2010.
Early Life and Education
John Merwin was born to a Crucian family in St. Croix and raised there before attending Princeton University on an academic scholarship.
At the University of Edinburgh, Merwin developed an interest in literature and linguistics. He took an intensive course on Romance languages which ultimately led to a career as a translator of French and other languages.
