St. Charles Middle/High School Principal Patricia Sowle recalls John Schantz as a person who could do it all – from building homes to creating computer software. John had an incredible talent, according to Sowle.

Bentley Community Schools superintendent, he served as a leader in times of hardship. His candor about issues was always refreshing, and he worked to improve the school system overall.

Early Life and Education

John Schantz earned his education from Syracuse University and then served in the United States Navy.

His service in the Navy saw him serve on numerous ships. He was known for his dependability and hardwork.

In his free time, he volunteered at the local schools and was involved in multiple community organizations.

He enjoyed golfing and skiing. Additionally, he was very involved in his church.

He was immensely proud of his family, especially his two daughters Jenny and Sarah. Additionally, he loved spoiling his grandchildren with lavishing attention. With a heart of gold, he would do anything for someone; making him an invaluable mentor to those who knew him. Tragically, he is greatly missed.

Professional Career

John Schantz has dedicated his career to developing learning solutions that assist senior teams in clarifying their company vision and launching strategic initiatives that make that vision a reality. At Root, he often serves as the go-to person for clients going through major transition, needing assistance managing organizational transformation.

On March 21, 2019, Schantz was sentenced to eight years and four months in federal prison for illegally importing fentanyl from China, then selling it as counterfeit prescription pills. The court determined he was selling these drugs out of desperation in order to fund his heroin addiction.

Achievements and Honors

Many students have been recognized academically for their achievements. This list includes nine honor roll members and several philanthropy award recipients, plus some athletic mentions too! Some have gone on to pursue lives encompassing sports or music; some joined the military while others are still in college. Thankfully, some returned for another school year!

Personal Life

John Schantz lived a life that was marked by intense focus, hardwork and perseverance. As an incredibly dedicated member of his community, he served on numerous civic and industry boards.

His personal interests included reading, golfing and traveling. Most of all though, he loved spending time with family and friends.

His career was marked by his dedication to education, with involvement in the Genesee County Superintendents Association and numerous school district committees. Furthermore, he created computer programs for math testing and evidence-based report cards.

In 2005, he was appointed superintendent of Bentley schools and served as a strong leader during difficult financial times, such as the consolidation of middle and high schools in 2009.

John Schantz is an acclaimed golfer and successful businessman with a net worth of $400 million. His holdings include apparel companies, golf courses, restaurants and even a wake park!

He is a partner at Aaronson Schantz Beiley PA and practices bankruptcy and insolvency law. With over four decades of experience in this area, he is an expert in this area.

He and his lawyer Michael Avenatti filed a lawsuit against Pepsi in 1996, alleging false advertising when the beverage company aired an ad promising customers seven million points. Although they lost the case, they managed to change the company’s advertising campaign; now customers would earn one point for every ten cents spent on Pepsi products up to seven million points.
