He is also the only Pope of the Catholic Church to have been consecrated to a cloistered life. One could say that he is the modern day equivalent to the medieval knights who were knighted to protect their kingdoms.

In 1944, the Arrow Cross Party, which supported the Nazi regime, organized deportations of the Jews from Budapest. By October of that year, John’s mother was arrested and taken to the Mauthausen concentration camp.

After his mother’s arrest, John lived in a refugee camp for a month, where his aunt grabbed him as he was being deported. The two were eventually freed by the Arrow Cross party on 18 January 1945.

A few months later, John’s father was released. However, the situation for the Jews continued to worsen.
