John Spohler, 93, of Bedminster, NJ passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021
John Spohler was an esteemed financial advisor who fostered relationships of trust and friendship with his clients. As the founding partner of Van Alstyne, Noel & Company, John retired as a managing director at JP Morgan in 2020.
On February 21st, 2013 the Cairo Historical Society honored Bob Uzzilia with a presentation of historical documents and ephemera. Additionally, Bob brought along Cairopoly – an updated version of Monopoly that recreates some classic board game elements.
Early Life and Education
John Spohler, 93 of Bedminster, NJ passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on December 4, 2021. He was born January 21st 1928 in Mt. Vernon NY to Margaret and Reinhard Spohler and earned both a BA and MBA from Columbia University.
Painter known for his winter landscapes and figure paintings, he was trained by Jan Jacob Spohler in Nederhorst ter Berg before moving to Amsterdam. After working in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Brussels and Leiden/Rotterdam, his artwork was exhibited internationally at museums including the Koninklijke Academie in Amsterdam. His signature style is small-scale landscape painting on wood panel that was inspired by nature.
Achievements and Honors
John Spohler has earned himself a place of honor in lacrosse circles. A three-time All-State honoree and key member of Tower Hill School’s 2010 Delaware state championship team, he also received an Alumni Award for his contributions to the school’s program.
Prior to attending Colgate University, he earned a place on the Mayor’s Cup All-Star Game and was recognized as an All-Lacrosse Ivy League first team player. As captain of Trinity School during their 2013 Lacrosse Ivy League title and two year letterwinner with 52 goals and 35 assists, Bruce also lettered in soccer and basketball; his parents being Bruce and Melissa Spohler.

John Spohler began working as a stock and delivery boy for his father’s delicatessen while still in high school. Afterward, he went on to pursue a career as a financial advisor for sixty-six years, cultivating trusting relationships with clients based on mutual respect and friendship. Additionally, John developed an interest in racehorse breeding while running his full service boarding stable until his passing at age 93 in Bedminster, NJ on December 4, 2021.
Jan Jacob Coenraad Spohler (1837 – 1934) was a 19th century painter renowned for his Winter landscape and figure paintings. He lived and worked in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Brussels, The Hague and Leiden; many of his paintings can be found at museums around America. Additionally his son William Coenraad Spohler (1877 – 1934) also created artwork.
