John Vearling
John Vearling – A Beloved Husband and Father
John Vearling, beloved husband and father, passed away on January 24, 2022. Survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy R. (Adams) Vearling; children Dennis and Susan Roohr, Larry and Betty Roohr, Shirley Vearling and John and Valerie Roohr; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; as well as predeceased by his parents Joseph and Jacqueline Vearling.
Early Life and Education
John Vearling was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the son of Joseph and Jacqueline Vearling. Survived by his beloved spouse Dorothy R. Vearling after 65 years together; daughter Jackie Vearling; children Meg Vearling, Samantha Vearling, Jessica Vearling and Jonathan Vearling; brother Joe Vearling; sister Audrey (Bill) Vearling; niece Olivia Vearling all survive him.
Vearling founded Mayfair Town Watch, an organization that seeks to unite local business leaders, community organizations and law enforcement officials in order to address quality of life crimes in the Northeast. He served on the 15th District Board, Lawndale Civic Association and Mayfair Business Association; on Tuesday he spearheaded an initiative that brought representatives of different Northeast neighborhoods together to brainstorm common strategies for supplementing police details while upholding family-first culture that has been a cornerstone since post-World War II boom began in this region.
Achievements and Honors
John was an intensely competitive individual, which showed in his many athletic accomplishments. As a wrestler for Wyoming Valley Conference, he earned All-Scholastic recognition and went on to become two time Pittston Area High School football Champions.
He also spent one year at Wyoming Seminary, where he earned the titles of Sunday Dispatch Outstanding Student-Athlete in wrestling and NE Regional 4th place football player as a senior.
After college, he pursued a career in the financial services sector for over thirty years. Throughout this time, he held positions in product engineering, strategic marketing and business management, as well as operations management.
In addition to his family responsibilities, he enjoyed traveling and sailing. He and Karen took a four-year cruise around the Mediterranean, as well as an extensive multi-year sailing excursion.
Personal Life
In addition to his prominent duties as a Philadelphia Eagle, Vearling was also an adoring father of six. He is married to Lori Giancaterino and proud grandfather to Jackie, Meg and Samantha. A daring executive in his day, Vearling often kept things short with little words for most of the time. In addition to his numerous business and personal connections, he was also an ardent philanthropist at heart. His interests ranged from arts and entertainment, sports, culture and most importantly philanthropy – the cornerstone of which remains his philanthropic legacy. In Mayfair where the top of the line always reigns supreme, it can be said that through his foundation Mayfair has been transformed into a vibrant hub for living and working.
