Despite suffering critical injuries when his legs got stuck in a grinder at his father-in-law’s animal rendering plant, he is alive and doing well. Ashley, his wife, says her man has always been a fighter; their family is immensely proud of him for taking such a brave stand.
Early Life and Education
John Vrana was raised Catholic, his parents having been baptized and confirmed in their parish. As a teen, John joined the altar server corps at church school where it gave him an invaluable perspective of worship services.
While attending Borromeo Seminary, he was exposed to the most cutting-edge religious education and edification. Additionally, he experienced firsthand the Church’s Charismatic Renewal movement and how it profoundly affected his prayer life. This knowledge would later serve him well in his role as Spiritual Director at Cleveland’s Seminary.
Professional Career
Since being selected by the Washington Capitals in 2014, Vrana has been an essential player on offense. His high-danger area shot attempts were second only to Alex Ovechkin and Oliver Bjorkstrand among Caps forwards this season.
He scored two memorable goals in November that helped the Capitals secure victories. His speed contributed greatly to their Metro title win in December, and he proved an effective penalty drawer during the playoffs as well.
Vrana’s career took a hit when he entered the player assistance program set up by the NHL and NHL Players Association. After spending two weeks in this program, Vrana was sent to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning loan.

John Vrana has earned a wealth of honors throughout his illustrious career. Perhaps most notably, he served as Senior Vice President at Make-A-Wish International where he managed global fundraising, communications and marketing initiatives.
He completed his high school education by earning an associate degree in electrical engineering. A highly accomplished and respected engineer, his knowledge has been put to good use during his career. For instance, he was involved with developing the Xerox(r) SmartClip – a cutting-edge technology which improves printing efficiency and quality. Furthermore, his involvement in MIT Media Lab’s e-Science project gave him insight into how digital information is transmitted and stored.

John Vrana is an accomplished actor with numerous television, film and voice-acting credits. His most recent roles include Fire Chief Wickersham in Secret Window and Booker (MPC) in The Day After Tomorrow.
He has a deep-seated faith, having felt the presence of the Holy Spirit during his studies at Borromeo Seminary in Cleveland. This transformation gave him a newfound respect for Mass and priests’ roles.
Vrana is an admirable man who does his best to support his family. After losing his job late last year, he has been working at Kuhni plant to stay afloat.
