John Woolard is a cleantech pioneer and the former president of BrightSource Energy. He has led the development, construction and operation of world-class clean power projects.
As VP Energy at Google, he is focused on Google’s global energy strategy through investment in new technology and energy projects. Previously, he served as President and CEO of BrightSource Energy, a developer of utility-scale solar power plants.

John Woolard is a businessman who has been involved in the energy industry for more than two decades. He co-founded Meridian Clean Energy and serves as its CEO.
Prior to that, he was VP of energy at Google and president and CEO of BrightSource Energy. He is also a Senior Operating Partner at Activate Capital.
The Woolard family has a long history in the United States. They came from England and settled in several states, including Virginia and Ohio.
Documents show JOHN WOOLARD, age about 24 years at that time, was signed up to Captain Alexander Machir’s Company of Militia in Dunmore County, Virginia. The Militia had been established to protect the residents of Shenandoah County from the threat of Indians and to defend against the French.

John Woolard has spent more than 30 years in the energy technology sector, leading teams that developed, acquired and completed some of the world’s largest clean power and decarbonization projects. He is currently the CEO of Meridian Clean Energy, an innovative company that designs and develops solar thermal electricity generation systems to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and help achieve climate goals.
He also serves on the board of PG&E Corporation and is an Operating Partner at Activate Capital Partners.
Throughout his career, he has held responsibility for the safety of thousands of employees and has been a strong advocate of workplace culture. In addition, he has extensive experience in the aftermath of natural disasters, including hurricanes and floods. Those experiences have made him uniquely suited for his new role at USF.

His entrepreneurship has earned him several awards, including the 2011 San Francisco Business Times Cleantech and Sustainability Award for Entrepreneurship. He is also a semi-finalist for the Ernst & Young Northern California Entrepreneur Of The Year Award.
He is also an accomplished playwright and has had his work produced at theaters across the country. His plays have been staged at Center Theatre Group, The Public Theatre and Actors Theatre of Louisville. He has also been commissioned by New Harmony Project, the Manhattan Theatre Club and the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London.

He has led the development and construction of world-class clean energy projects, including the $2.2 billion Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in California’s Mojave Desert.
He co-founded Silicon Energy, which was acquired by Itron in 2003. He also served as VP of Energy at Google and as President and CEO of BrightSource Energy.
The WOOLARD family is widely established throughout the USA, especially in Ohio and Virginia.
