George Waring, a drainage engineer and anticontagionist, believed that disease was largely caused by the odor of sewer gas exuded from putrid house drains. He advocated the installation of sanitary fixtures and a complete sewage system.

Early Life and Education

Johns sanitary was born and raised in Lancastrian England and moved to London when he was a young adult. He attended school and later law college in the Inner Temple. He also became a journalist and gained some experience in the publishing industry. He wrote on a variety of topics, including health and welfare. His writings were influential and helped to improve the lives of many people around the world. He became well known as the founder of sanitary science in Britain, a field that was very new at the time. He worked to establish legislation that paved the way for this field.

During his early career, he served as director of the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, which was founded in 1916 with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation. It was a model of public health education and was widely influential in the field.

Achievements and Honors

The College recently celebrated students for their academic, service and leadership achievements. HCC President Nicholas Belfield and Student Government Association Vice President Rachel Yates were among the honored at Honors Night.

A number of St John’s staff members have been honoured by their peers and the Cambridge University Students’ Union (CUSU). Dr Georgina Evans was shortlisted in the Inclusive Practice category.

Fellow Dr Uta Paszkowski, a molecular biologist, was awarded membership of the European Molecular Biology Organisation for her outstanding contribution to research. Evolutionary biologist Joana Meier, also a Fellow, was selected as one of nine new Branco Weiss Fellowship – Society in Science ‘truly exceptional’ Fellows after an extended global recruitment campaign.

JCR Mental Health Officer Becca Gutteridge created a range of activities to help the St John’s community stay mentally healthy and happy during the first wave of the pandemic. Fourth-year Zoology student Gabriela Montejo-Kovacevich, a welfare officer for the SBR – the postgraduate student council – successfully applied to the College Fund to provide free sustainable sanitary products for students.
