Kelis’ father Kenneth was a Pentecostal minister and jazz musician who taught at Wesleyan University. Her mother Eveliss, a Chinese-Puerto Rican fashion designer who inspired Kelis to pursue singing as a career, provided inspiration. Kelis sang in church choirs, learned piano and violin and played saxophone and drums before she was kicked out of her parents’ house at age 16. However, she continued her education at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art & Performing Arts where she formed an R&B trio; bartendering sales associate work helped finance her musical career further.
Kaleidoscope was released mid-1998 on Virgin Records and marked an important moment in her music career, setting off subsequent album releases and subsequent success for this artist.
Kelis has become known for being a world-class singer-songwriter and chef since she attended Manhattan Country School and then Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art & Performing Arts in New York City as an undergraduate.
She formed the R&B trio BLU (Black Ladies United) during high school and met Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes production duo; these producers helped her gain a record deal with Virgin Records for which she released her debut album Kaleidoscope on December 15, 1999.
