Early Life and Education
Lucas was raised in a one-room cabin by his mother, Viola Dixon Lucas, who brutalized him sexually and physically. Additionally, she forced him to watch her have sex with strange men and dressed him in clothing meant for women.
After graduating from the University of Southern California, Lucas worked at its esteemed School of Cinematic Arts as an assistant to director Verna Fields. Additionally, Lucas created Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB which won first prize at a national student film festival.
Following her success at the 1997 Sensation exhibition, Lucas found herself disillusioned with the metropolitan art scene and decided to relocate to Suffolk where she works from her home part-time as an artist – she describes this process as “playing with my hands rather than thinking with my head”. Lucas currently resides with partner Julien Simmons in a converted cottage.
After graduating, Lucas established American Zoetrope with Francis Ford Coppola to break free from Hollywood studio system control. Together they produced Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB which won first prize at 1967-68 National Student Film Festival.
American Graffiti (1973), Lucas’s feature debut and inspired by his childhood in Modesto, California was both critically and commercially successful.
In 1977, Lucas began work on Star Wars – which would later become an international cultural icon despite its difficult production process – releasing it to cinemas worldwide in 1980 and becoming an enormous box office hit. Lucas continued working with this franchise as an executive producer on its sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi while simultaneously writing and directing other movies in addition to remaining closely involved as an author and director in others such as Fright Night or American Graffiti among many other projects.
Achievement and Honors
Lucas was honored with induction into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame as its second “Film, Television and Media” contributor in 2006. She also holds membership in both California Halls of Fame.
The Lucas Sauce TV show was intended to encourage American housewives to add artistry and creativity to their family dinner tables through cooking. Furthermore, it served as an effective means of advertising gas kitchen appliances from Robershaw-Fulton Controls Co.; Lucas was paid by this organization.

Lucas began her art world career as part of the Young British Artists (YBA). Following participation in Damien Hirst’s Freeze exhibition, she went on to produce work and forge relationships with fellow artists like Gary Hume, Angus Fairhurst and Gillian Wearing.
She gained notoriety for being outspokenly critical of the male-dominated art scene and in the late-20th century helped change attitudes toward women’s artistic production. Additionally, she voiced discontent at how media portrayals have misrepresented her; furthermore she no longer reads art magazines.
