Conan Gray Has A Style That’s A Truer Reflection Of Gen-Z Fashion

After making his major label debut with Kid Krow, Conan Gray has carved out his own path as a creative powerhouse and the go-to representative of a generation of young artists who are unafraid to embrace their unique voice and vision. His debut LP, crafted alongside longtime producer Dan Nigro, reached #1 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart, while his two-time platinum hits “Heather” and “Maniac” became modern pop standards.

His music has been praised by a plethora of top tastemakers and his live performances have been hailed as rapturous displays of talent that draw crowds to theaters, arenas and festivals alike. He’s also a standout on the fashion stage, rocking outfits that feel both grounded and bold.

One of his most enthralling fashion moments during the 2022 VMAs was when he changed into an ethereal Harris Reed look, complete with white tulle and lace embellishments. He wore the jacket over flared black trousers and finished off the look with black lace gloves and silver metallic Marc Jacobs Kiki platform boots.

Another standout look from Conan Gray’s closet is the chiffon cape he wore to a recent concert performance. The star told Vogue’s Hamish Bowles that he and Valentino’s pink-loving creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli wanted “something ethereal, something theatrical” for the night.

He has worn a number of different styles from the designer’s fall 2022 couture collection to date. At a recent show in Milan, Gray donned a sequined pink chiffon shirt and matching satin trousers, while for a recent Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival performance, he opted for a head-to-toe look featuring a pink velvet minidress and pink satin pants.

The star has also opted for a slew of pink looks from the designer’s ready-to-wear line in the past. Earlier this spring, he donned a pink satin two-piece suit with a sheer silk dress for a performance at Coachella and again for the VMAs.

Throughout his career, Conan Gray has been a fashion chameleon, embracing a range of trends with equal intensity. He’s also had a knack for soft-launching a style that feels like it might be rooted in a visual ode to Shakespeare, especially in his off-stage wardrobe.

His current aesthetic, as he put it in an interview with Business Insider last month, reflects the “affluent but also grungy” elements of his music. His latest look, a pleated tartan maxi skirt and band-inspired crop top, is no exception to this trend.

With his new album, Superache, set to release in June, it’s clear that Gray is on a mission to reestablish his place as an unwavering voice of the Gen-Z generation. He’s tapped hitmaker Julia Michaels to assist him on the album, and they’re both expected to provide their own unique touch to the songs that adorn it. The resulting record is a creative stratosphere, combining Gray’s distinct brand of lyrical storytelling with a soaring musicality that is equally empowering and heartwarming.
