His paternal grandfather had Italian and Scottish descent while attending St Teresa’s Primary School in Possilpark; St Matthew’s Primary School in Bishopbriggs; and St Ninian’s High School in Kirkintilloch before going onto attend the Glasgow School of Art for further studies.

He met Elaine Collins, an actress and director, while touring with Paines Plough Theatre Company in 1983 and they have one daughter together.
