Oliver Pierce, retired Gonzaga University assistant athletic director and sports information director was honored this summer by being inducted into the College Sports Communicators Hall of Fame.

Early Life and Education

Every evening before Allen football games, quarterback Oliver Pierce enjoys sharing a pregame meal with teammates. On weekends he splits his time between 7-on-7 football tournaments and wrestling tournaments.

After the Revolution, a national movement to establish grammar schools and academies for girls took shape; one influential institution was Sarah Pierce’s Litchfield Female Academy which she launched from her own home in 1798.

Oliver Pierce was an indefatigable sports communications professional from Spokane who never left within 100 miles of home. Known as a master builder who always sought to forge relationships, Pierce established himself in Spokane by being responsible for the growth of Gonzaga University men’s basketball while overseeing 15 other teams for Gonzaga University Bulldogs. Professional Career

Oliver Pierce was an all-around athlete during his professional career. Although he competed in wrestling and football, it was his work in sports communications that truly distinguished him. He mentored many aspiring SIDs – myself included – while serving as an exceptional example to our profession.

Pierce may never have achieved national stardom, but he was revered in Boston. A memorable moment occurred during Game 3 of the 2008 Eastern Conference semifinals when he passed Larry Bird on their all-time scoring list; fans loved that reminder that The Truth was indeed something special. Pierce spent 15 seasons with Boston before spending some time with Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers before returning home again for good.

Achievement and Honors

Oliver Pierce spent his career cultivating relationships in sports information. This approach contributed to his longstanding success in an industry in which many first-time SIDs burn out quickly.

Pierce made the most of every opportunity that came his way, whether that was helping with NCAA first and second round men’s basketball tournaments in Pullman or working with College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) national workshop attendees. He took full advantage of every chance he was presented.

Last week at the Fargodome, Pierce won another national junior Greco-Roman title to add to his folkstyle win earlier in the summer and become just the fourth Texas wrestler ever to achieve such an accomplishment. Pierce trains at Best Trained in Allen; where two other triple crowners hail from.

Personal Life

Oliver Pierce has over 33 years of experience working in college athletics communications, serving 26 of those years as assistant sports information director at Gonzaga University. In 2010 he was honored by being inducted into the College Sports Communicators Hall of Fame.

At night before an Allen football game, its senior quarterback would gather with his teammates for a pregame meal and wrestle for junior national titles in Fargo the following day – seamlessly merging both sports together. He had grown accustomed to this balance between athletic disciplines.

Beam is best-known for his portrayal of Dr. Niles Crane on Frasier and has since appeared in multiple movies such as Joan Micklin Silver’s Crossing Delancey and Terry Gilliam’s The Fisher King. On Broadway he most recently played Sir Robin in Monty Python’s Spamalot as well as Horace Vandergelder in Hello Dolly!’s 2017 revival.
