East Enders may recognize Sylvester Manor Educational Farm from Beyonce’s Black is King video, which highlights its woodlands, waterways and ancient trees. On Shelter Island itself, rehabilitation work for its Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground has begun in earnest.

Early Life and Education

Steve Manor was an esteemed educator and public servant in Howell who served on numerous boards and committees within his community. Additionally, he was active in local politics having won election to Howell City Council in 1999 and serving as Mayor Pro Tem until his recent resignation.

He had a passion for teaching, especially working with children. His aim was to show them just how interesting mathematics, science, and other subjects could be.

Hashmi participated in various student organizations and services such as student senate, multicultural club and daycare center volunteering. Additionally, he participated in many service activities like food drives and raising money for Ukrainian service projects. Following graduation Hashmi plans on attending four-year colleges to major in biology before eventually pursuing her ambition of becoming a veterinarian.

Professional Career

Steve has over three decades of experience in the landscape industry. He is certified as a Professional Horticulturist and possesses various certificates from Project Management to Tree Care Safety and Practices Certification as well as 30-Hour OSHA Compliance Training. Additionally, in his free time Steve enjoys competitive bass fishing as well as Ravens football games.

Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin entered a statement into the Congressional Record on Thursday for Manor, an educator and city official renowned in Howell for 32 years of teaching first at Michigan Avenue School and later Highlander Way Middle School before retiring and winning election to City Council in 1999.

He is also an enthusiastic chef who enjoys creating delicious dishes for Hill House Manor’s residents. According to him, working at Hill House Manor has helped restore both his passion for learning and work ethic.

Achievement and Honors

Steve Manor dedicated his life to public service, both as an educator and city councilmember for decades. Starting out teaching at Howell Michigan Avenue School in 1966 before going on to Highlander Way Middle School a decade later and later retiring after 32 years at Highlander Way Middle School; 23 years on Howell’s City Council before stepping down earlier this month due to Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin entering into the Congressional Record her appreciation of Steve for his commitment to diversity and inclusive leadership.

Manor has collaborated on recordings with various artists, including Depeche Mode. Working as Glyn Johns’ engineering assistant allowed him to learn “the mind set of studio life,” according to Manor, and ultimately resulted in him joining them on their Re-Mix for their next full album release.

Personal Life

Steve Manor spends much of his free time enjoying snowboarding, tennis and running with his family. Additionally, he is active with several community organizations: Hospice & Community Care Board Member; Lititz RecCenter Board Member and Rhinebeck Board of Education Member.

Depeche Mode engineer/producer Martin Gore also founded The Manor at York Town which offers assisted living and memory care facilities.

Mr. Manor has traveled to over 40 countries, drawing upon his experiences to craft activities tailored for The Manor residents that celebrate diversity of culture. He is dedicated to health and wellness, working closely with his team in providing superior care. His service to his community has earned him many honors and awards.
