Grassi Rising Star – Coach Steve Lemke
Steve Lemke has earned recognition within Grassi for his expertise in financial report preparation, audit, attestation, and tax work. A frequent speaker at industry events, Steve is also part of its Audit & Accounting Committee.
He earned a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Notre Dame University, where his scholarship and teaching were honored with the Riley Prize in Art Criticism. Additionally, he serves as Associate Director at Saint John’s Pottery as well as being an environmental artist-in-residence.
Early Life and Education
An old axiom states that exceptional talent makes coaches look their best. Florida track and field associate head coach Steve Lemke embodies this principle with his remarkable success recruiting and mentoring elite-level athletes from Europe – particularly his throwers who have won national titles at UTEP, Arizona State, and now Gators track & field under his guidance. Six have won championships under Lemke’s watch at all three institutions!
Lemke earned an MFA in sculpture from Notre Dame University and received a U.S. Fulbright Research Fellowship to study former Czechoslovakia. Additionally, Lemke has published multiple books including “Biblical Hermeneutics”, as well as articles for multiple denominational publications. Furthermore, Lemke served on 10 academic committees at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth Texas before lecture internationally on Christian apologetics and God doctrine.
Professional Career
Steven Lemke has enjoyed an esteemed coaching career. Beginning at Southeast Missouri State, his tenure included Yale, UTEP, Arizona State and coaching for Norwegian senior and junior throwing groups as well as Queensland Academy of Sport in Australia.
As part of Virginia track and field’s coaching staff, he works closely with throwers from both men’s and women’s sides. His impressive resume boasts 13 NCAA individual title victories as an athlete coach.
As well as his solo works, he serves as Associate Director at The Saint John’s Pottery where he employs sculpture and digital fabrication technology to explore issues surrounding land use and architectural production. For these endeavors, he has received funding from the College Art Association, Minnesota State Arts Board, and McKnight Foundation – among others.
Achievement and Honors
Lemke employs sculpture, installation art and digital fabrication technology to address issues related to land use, architectural production and community. His work has received support from organizations such as the U.S. Department of State, College Art Association, Minnesota State Arts Board and Central Minnesota Arts Board; additionally he serves as Associate Director at Saint John’s Pottery as well as being an environmental artist-in-residence at his university.
From 1990-96 and 1986-89 respectively, he served as head field events coach at Yale and UTEP respectively. Additionally, from 2002-04 he held the national senior and junior throws coordinator position with Queensland Academy of Sport Australia.
He led Florida athletes in winning all 35 indoor and outdoor SEC meets during his tenure, leading them to nine men’s NCAA titles and seven women’s. Furthermore, he has won multiple NARI Contractor of the Year awards.
Personal Life
Steven Lemke has extensive research interests in theological anthropology, Christian apologetics, world religions, Biblical hermeneutics and Baptist theological heritage. He regularly leads sessions at the Evangelical Theological Society as well as contributing authors for several books.
Steven has served as technical director for orchestral video concerts such as The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses and Heroes: A Video Game Concert produced by Heroes Game Festival as well as National Geographic Symphony For Our World. Additionally he has an impressive career as classical recording engineer.
Dr. Joseph has both a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Master of Fine Art degrees from Notre Dame. There, he received both an honorable mention for excellence in teaching as well as being honored with the Riley Prize in Art History and Criticism.
