Thomas Hurley was a highly esteemed Australian surgeon and medical administrator, but more importantly was an ardent family man, spending many camping holidays and trout fishing trips with his wife.

He served Old St. Patrick’s, an Irish community in Chicago’s south side, first as assistant pastor and then as pastor.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Hurley was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana and attended Yorktown High School and Indiana University for his education. Additionally he joined Phi Gamma Delta fraternity before practicing law in east central Indiana for over 30 years – serving his clients while being an outstanding father, son, husband, friend and public servant.

His popularity was undeniable and he served St. Cajetan’s Parish, an Irish community, for 24 years as both assistant pastor and full-time pastor.

On a more professional note, he worked at Royal Melbourne Hospital as a lecturer (and then senior lecturer) of embryology and histology. His students later remembered him as alert, cheerful, fond of fun, skilled at sports, knowledgeable in studies and confident expressing opinions freely.

Professional Career

Hurley was an active participant in his community, serving on multiple boards and professional organizations as well as volunteering with Red Cross and American Heart Association for many years.

After the war he resumed practice in Collins Street and served as physician to out-patients at Royal Melbourne Hospital. His patients described him as being alert, merry, fond of fun, good at sports and studies, forthright in his opinions and companionable… a fine gentleman without empirical humbug’.

Hurley guided Rhode Island to a 23-10 record during 2015-16, returning them to the NCAA tournament and boasting one of the nation’s best defensive units with only 64.8 points allowed per game against opponents. As a result, he was honored as USBWA District I Coach of the Year.

Achievement and Honors

Tom Hurley was a man of great integrity and strong convictions, dedicating his professional life to helping those around him without seeking praise or accolades in return. A true public servant, Tom served Boone County as Emergency Management Coordinator before working at University Hospital as an EMT and Carlsbad Caverns as park ranger.

He has received numerous accolades, including the New York State Coaches Association Honor Award in wrestling and Football Coach of the Decade honors. Additionally, he serves on the Elmira City Schools’ Board of Trustees.

Hurley has also found success outside of medical practice; working as a film industry freelancer and theater director. A member of both the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts as well as being on the Victorian branch council for British Medical Association.

Thomas Hurley is an accomplished attorney and businessman specializing in family law, corporate transactions and real estate. With more than $350 Million of transactions he has participated in over his career – many as a consultant helping family enterprises navigate the unique challenges they encounter when passing from generation to generation.

He is an active member of the State Bar of New York and licensed to practice law before all Federal Courts in New York State. Currently based out of Moorestown, New Jersey – Hurley & Laughlin Law Office are his principal place of work.

One of his students remarked that while as a surgeon he was “orthodox and safe”, he still exhibited style. His diagnosis relied upon thorough questioning of social history as well as physical exam.

He serves as President of GEO Group Inc, which offers prison and corrections services nationwide and serves clients both domestically and abroad. Over 4,000 employees work under him nationwide at his company which employs them nationwide; no insider transactions were reported within 18 months.

In August 1971, Hurley set up his own marine repair firm similar to Marine. Much of the work performed was similar, including servicing customers known to have previously purchased from Marine.
