Thomas Krane – Managing Director at Insight Partners

Thomas Krane joined Insight Partners as a Managing Director on their investment team in 2012, with expertise in cybersecurity, DevOps, IT automation and other areas. Over 30 new standalone investments were made under his guidance; five went public while four experienced successful exits; these include Cylance, Darktrace, JFrog, QASymphony and Tenable among many others.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Krane is an American science and medicine speaker who has delivered lectures on a wide variety of subjects, such as risk acceptance and improvisation. He has spoken at universities, corporations and non-profit organizations around the globe.

Born in Ireland and raising his early years on the family farm in County Kerry, he joined Scott’s 1911-1913 Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica where his lifesaving actions during their race to the South Pole earned him recognition and was awarded with an Albert Medal medallion.

After moving to New York City and living a bohemian lifestyle among poor artists in Bowery, he developed an accurate depiction of slum life for his first novel Maggie.

Professional Career

Thomas Krane joined Insight Partners’ investment team as a managing director in 2012. His primary areas of interest include cybersecurity, DevOps, and infrastructure software investments. Since joining, Thomas has led over 30 standalone investments at Insight; four companies he invested in (Thycotic, Prevalent, 1stdibs and SentinelOne) have had strategic exits through Insight’s exit strategies.

He began his academic career building software for astronomy research using machine learning “before it became cool”. Through Insight and his prior academic experiences, this has given him unique insight into start-up world and their founders.

He holds both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude). Additionally, in his free time he plays bass for an influential New York cover band.

Achievement and Honors

Thomas Krane has earned numerous distinctions during his distinguished career. At Penn he received both a Bachelor and a Master in Astrophysics before being honored with a Dana Scholarship as well as membership of Phi Beta Kappa and recognition awards from American Medical Association – such as Physician’s Recognition Awards in Anesthesiology and Pediatric Critical Care respectively.

He has received the College’s esteemed cum laude award, given to those students who demonstrate outstanding engagement with its curriculum through taking graduate courses, taking cross-divisional courses or pursing minors. A committee reviews each student’s record to determine whether they deserve this distinction.

The Thomas Crean Prize is given annually to second-year students for outstanding performance in humanistic pursuits within the College community. It aims to support an academic or teaching exchange program or honors thesis project abroad.

Personal Life

Thomas Krane attended the University of Pennsylvania and received both his Bachelor and Master of Science. Additionally, he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and earned the summa cum laude award from their institution. Additionally, Krane played bass for New York City cover band Petty Toms while on tour.

Crane is a true Witness and loyally supports Katrina in her mission. Katrina idolizes him and often draws his picture in her journal; prior to him becoming involved she had previously been diagnosed with transient aphasia due to a spirit that attempted to take her life.

He is an avid Star Trek fan, enjoys sipping dark rum with lime, and dislikes eggnog. Currently on the board of Keeper Security as well as having served previously on those of Adaptive Shield, DNSFilter, IOActive Brinqa Noname Security Armis Perimeter 81 & Pentera
