Thomas Santoro was an incredible retired history teacher in Cherry Hill schools. His passion was making history come alive for his students – even dressing them up to teach about Ancient Greece or reading out headlines from Julius Caesar’s reign of terror! Thomas was well respected among his colleagues.

He started off his career serving the New York Police Department (NYPD), later working on search and recovery efforts at Ground Zero following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, then eventually dying of cancer caused by his work at Ground Zero.

Tom and Andrea Capellas met at Wake Forest Law School where Tom competed in a trial competition and she joined its Trial Team.

Tom Santoro has been teaching communication, media, business and intercultural business communication at Macromedia University’s international management master’s program for more than 10 years.

Santoro had an illustrious career as a professional tennis player, winning many tournaments while becoming one of the most reliable players on tour. He achieved great success against top ten opponents and became the first person ever to appear in 70 Grand Slam tournaments.

Santoro was renowned as an influential teacher and coach throughout his career, earning the admiration and affection of students and teammates alike. After retiring from sports, his primary responsibilities became raising his children while being the jokester among friends and acquaintances.

He led Lehigh to an unprecedented 23 dual wins during his first season back at Bethlehem and a second-place finish at the EIWA Championships, along with mentoring two NCAA champions–Darian Cruz and Scott Parker–at nationals while three other wrestlers qualified for All-American honors.

He regularly addresses high school students about dating violence, handing out yellow ribbons with white doves to wear in their rooms or hang from cars or dorm room doors as reminders that both physical and emotional abuse constitute domestic violence. Many young people don’t realize this fact.

The Santoros met during their first-year at Wake Forest Law and started dating shortly after she entered his trial competition. Their classmates often teased them about their playful bantering and budding romance, often tease them about it!

He took great joy in helping offensive linemen develop into capable adults while shaping boys into men over his 36-year tenure at Central Catholic High School in Toledo. In 2011 after finally retiring as head coach he took a leave of absence until returning as head coach again for one last term in 2012.

He was known as an enthusiastic family man and humorous among his peers. Unfortunately, he succumbed to cancer caused by his efforts at searching and recovering following 9/11 attacks.
