Early Life and Education
Olivas was born in North Hollywood, California and raised in El Paso, Texas. He received his undergraduate degree from University of Texas at El Paso before going on to earn a master’s from Rice University.
NASA selected him for Astronaut Candidate Training in June 1998. This intensive training included numerous scientific and technical briefings, training in Shuttle and International Space Station systems, physiological conditioning training and T-38 flight instruction; it also covered wilderness survival and water survival techniques.
Olivas served aboard STS-128, the 30th Shuttle mission to the International Space Station. During his six68 hours in space – including 34 EVA hours – Olivas performed various maintenance tasks and research projects during this mission.
Wilmer Olivas-Alvarez was born and raised in Nicaragua before immigrating with his family to the United States at age five. After living in Annandale and Alexandria respectively, where he met his future wife; together they now share three children – Romelo, Adonis and Kapri -.
Peter Weir’s Fearless with Javier Bardem and Nancy Savoca’s The 24 Hour Woman are just a couple of his many movies and TV appearances; he also featured prominently in Kismet Films’ Spanish-language AIDS PSA campaign “Join the Fight”, alongside Julissa Bermudez, Erick Elias, and 2006 Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera as co-stars.
